Sperenberg gypsum quarries
Just a stone's throw away, the information boards on the Soil Geo Trail tell the exciting story of the "Sperenberg I" borehole.
It's a good thing that no one would otherwise have the idea that the small pond is 1,271 meters deep. Gypsum and clay were mined in the 19th century in the area where you now walk along the informative trail between gypsum quarries and clay pits. A deep borehole was drilled here in 1871 to explore the ground, creating the world's first borehole over 1,000 meters deep.
