Kemberg

Just under 4 km from the R1 European Cycle Route between Bergwitz and Lutherstadt Wittenberg and directly on the Berlin-Leipzig cycle route lies the charming rural town of Kemberg - the green center of the region and the northern entrance to the Düben Heath Nature Park.

The highlight of Kemberg's beautiful old town is St. Mary's Church, whose 86-metre-high tower is one of the main works of neo-Gothic church architecture in Saxony-Anhalt. With the nearby Bergwitzsee lake and the Dübener Heide, Kemberg also offers charming surroundings that are just waiting to be discovered.

Kemberg is the center of the unified municipality, which was formed in 2010 from fourteen previously independent municipalities. The town's past is characterized in particular by the numerous personalities who lived and worked here. At the end of the 14th century, the Kemberg provost Nikolaus von Riesenburg was in charge of the chancellery of the German Emperor Charles IV.
In the 16th century, the citizens of Kemberg joined Martin Luther's Reformation movement at an early stage. Just four years after the theses were posted, in 1521, the Kemberg provost Bernhardi, a friend of Martin Luther, was one of the first clerical dignitaries to marry.

The fact that it was spiritual dignitaries in particular who shaped the history of Kemberg can still be seen in the townscape. St. Mary's Church still dominates Kemberg's beautiful old town today. Other architectural sights can be discovered during a walk, such as the post mile column or the former military hospital of the Kemberg garrison, a monumental late classicist solid building, which is now used as an administrative building.

After a tour of discovery through the old town, a detour to the nearby Bergwitzsee offers relaxation. We look forward to your visit!
