Monument to the Battle of the Nations

Leipzig Monument to the Battle of the Nations

Not far from Napoleon's former command post, Leipzig's most famous landmark stands in the middle of the battlefield of the Battle of the Nations in 1813.

Constructed from concrete and granite porphyry and inaugurated in 1913, the monument is 91 meters high. The viewing platform offers a magnificent panoramic view of Leipzig and its surroundings. Built according to designs by Bruno Schmitz, the gigantic monument impresses with its crypt decorated with knights, the almost ten-metre-high colossal figures and the 68-metre-high equestrian dome.

Under the special acoustic conditions of the monumental domed hall, concert events become an unforgettable experience.

At the foot of the monument, the FORUM 1813 museum provides information about the Battle of the Nations:

Half a million soldiers from all over Europe fought for the political future of the continent in one of the most terrible mass battles of the 19th century. Weapons, uniforms, equipment, pictures and personal memorabilia bring the tragic time of war to life. Attractions include personal items from the possessions of Marshal Poniatowski, who drowned near Leipzig.
The highlight of the exhibition is a 15 square meter diorama with over 3000 fully sculpted figures. Reconstructed as accurately as possible according to contemporary descriptions, a village from the Leipzig area was created as it may have appeared to the viewer on October 18, 1813 during the attack by Russian-Prussian troops.
