Fleming churches

Typical of the Fläming are the many medieval fieldstone churches that can be found in almost every village.

In the 12th century, as part of Albrecht the Bear's eastward expansion, Flemish settlers were brought to this region to reclaim the marshy land. The region and places such as Brück and Eupern (from the Belgian Bruges and Ypres respectively) owe their names to them.

As the Fläming is a terminal moraine landscape, farmers have always had to contend with stones in their fields, which they collected and used to build churches.
