St. Thomas Church

St. Thomas Church Leipzig

St. Thomas Church is over 800 years old and was an important place of work for Johann Sebastian Bach.

Thomaskirche was built in 1212 as a monastery church. It can therefore look back on more than 800 years of history. For 27 years, it was the place of work of Johann Sebastian Bach, who was Thomaskantor in Leipzig from 1723 to 1750. During this time, he directed the St. Thomas Choir, which still enjoys international fame today.

The majority of Bach's works were composed here. St. Thomas Church is also Bach's final resting place and is considered an important center of classical music - far beyond the borders of Germany.

A particular highlight are the weekly motets on Fridays at 6 p.m. (in the liturgical form of vespers, lasting approx. 1 hour) and Saturdays at 3 p.m. (usually with a performance of a cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach). As a rule, the motets are performed by the Thomanerchor Leipzig; in their absence, guest ensembles or guest organists replace the choir. The admission program for the motet is available from 45 minutes before the start at the entrances to St. Thomas Church. Advance ticket sales are not possible.
