Leipzig Zoo
In the middle of the city, visitors can embark on a fascinating journey around the world through the zoo's six adventure worlds and admire a total of around 800 animal species.
Founded in 1878, Leipzig Zoo brings together a wide variety of animal species and vegetation that can often only be seen in the wild and outside the European continent.
A visit to the world's largest great ape enclosure, Pongoland, is just as recommended as an audience with the king of the animals in the Makasi-Simba lion savannah. Not far away, giraffes, antelopes, zebras and flamingos can be observed in their natural habitat on a safari through the vastness of the Kiwara savannah. Also worth seeing are the majestic tigers in the Siberian Tiger Taiga or the elephants in the Ganesha Mandir elephant temple.
White-nosed coatis, guanacos, capybaras, large anteaters, maned wolves, large maras, Darwin's nandus and chaco peccaries can be seen in their natural habitat in the South America Adventure World with the Pampa, Pantanal and Patagonia landscapes.
Construction work is currently underway on the new section of the South America Adventure World - Tierra del Fuego. The new facility with two water basins, an underground tunnel and an overlaid seabird area is due to be completed in 2023. Construction is also continuing on the aquarium. When it reopens in 2021, visitors can look forward to fascinating fresh and salt water worlds with their inhabitants.
The Gondwanaland tropical adventure world is adjacent to the zoo grounds. The hall, which opened in 2011, has a subtropical temperature of 25° Celsius all year round, creating ideal conditions for the 300 or so animals and 24,000 tropical plants. The tropical jungle is home to three continents, which can be explored by boat via the waterways or along the winding paths. The zoo as an animal park and the Gondwanaland for a tropical feeling of warmth are ideal for day trips - especially with children. Amidst the numerous leisure activities, Leipzig Zoo is one of the particularly family-friendly highlights that you should definitely visit during your stay.
The gastronomic services at Kiwara Lodge, Restaurant Palmensaal, Hacienda Las Casas and Restaurant Patakan in Gondwanaland help to satisfy the hunger of young and old animal explorers alike.
