Berlin Wall art

East Side Gallery

Once the Berlin Wall, today the longest open-air gallery in the world.

At 1,316 meters, the art mile on the banks of the Spree in Friedrichshain is the longest continuous section of the Wall that is still standing. 118 artists from 21 countries began painting the East Side Gallery immediately after the fall of the Wall. The open-air gallery opens on September 28, 1990. Just over a year later, it is listed as a historical monument.

The artists commented on the political changes of 1989/90 in over one hundred paintings on the former east side of the Wall - using a wide variety of artistic means. Some works on the East Side Gallery are particularly popular: Dimitrji Vrubel's Brother's Kiss or Birgit Kinder's Trabant breaking through the Wall. They - especially the famous East Side Gallery kiss - are not only popular postcard motifs, but may soon also find their way onto your camera memory.
