Lutherstadt Wittenberg

A visit to Lutherstadt Wittenberg, surrounded by the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve and the Fläming, means experiencing world history up close.

To this day, the town is still characterized by its most famous resident. Dr. Martin Luther helped Wittenberg achieve world fame with the posting of his theses in 1517. The Luther House, All Saints' Castle Church with the famous Thesis Door and many other places where the reformers worked preserve the spirit of this time.

The founding of Wittenberg's Leucorea University in 1502 made Wittenberg a center of attraction for theologians, philosophers and artists. Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon, Lucas Cranach the Elder and many others were drawn to the up-and-coming intellectual center. The Lutheran Reformation movement began here and Wittenberg became one of the intellectual and cultural centers of 16th century Europe. A historic town center has been preserved, with the spirit of the time palpable everywhere. The museums, which preserve the legacy of the Reformation, stand close together and the genius of the time is still alive in the Leucorea.

The Luther House is home to the largest museum of Reformation history in the world, while in the Melanchthon House, visitors can gain an impression of the world and everyday life of Melanchthon and his family in the renovated old building. An exhibition in the new building is dedicated to the work and influence of the humanist. Another main attraction is the All Saints' Castle Church, built in 1506, on the door of which Martin Luther is said to have posted his 95 theses. The town church of St. Mary's, Luther's preaching church, with Lucas Cranach the Elder's Reformation altar and the Cranach Houses with the associated Cranach Courtyards also attract visitors from all over the world to Wittenberg. Art, culture and history enthusiasts can look forward to a wide variety of top-class religious and secular events, such as art exhibitions, music performances, symposia, historical celebrations, festivals and much more.

The Luther memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg were recognized as a cultural heritage of humanity in December 1996 and have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site ever since. Wittenberg is only 35 km away from three other UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz, the Bauhaus Dessau and the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve. The town is therefore located in a region full of cultural and natural treasures waiting to be discovered.

Whether as part of a cycle tour on one of Europe's major cycle routes or as a pilgrimage site on the Way of St. James or the Luther Trail - come to Wittenberg and immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of this famous town and the Luther-Bauhaus-Gartenreich region.
